What is Sean nós dancing?

Sean nós means “old style” and it is a traditional Irish percussive dance style.

It is danced solo and has a strong connection with traditional Irish music.

There are no fixed steps or set dances — the dancer responds to the music, lets it guide the movement, and creates the dance in the moment.

It reflects personality, emotions, and each dancer’s own journey.

You often ask

Do I need any previous experience with Irish dance?

No. Sean nós dancing is a wonderful style even for complete beginners. We start with simple steps, rhythm, and gradually learning how to listen and connect with the music. You don’t need to know any choreographies or have experience with step dancing. All you need is curiosity and the desire to explore a new way of moving.

What is the difference between sean nós dancing and step dancing?

Both styles come from the Irish dance tradition, but they have a very different character. Irish step dancing focuses more on precise technique, choreographies, and clearly structured steps. Sean nós dancing is more relaxed, deeply connected with music, and gives more space for personal expression and improvisation. It is not about everyone dancing exactly the same way — every dancer can gradually discover their own style.

What does improvisation mean? Do I have to make up my own steps?

Don’t worry. Improvisation doesn’t mean that on your first day we will put you in front of everyone and say: “Now create something.” First, you will learn basic steps, rhythms, and principles of the style. Step by step, you will discover how to combine steps, create variations, and respond to the music. Improvisation develops naturally.

I do not have a good sense of rhythm. Can I still join?

Yes. Sean nós dancing is actually a beautiful way to gradually develop your sense of rhythm. We will listen to the music, work with simple rhythm patterns, and learn how to communicate with the music through movement.

Do I need special dance shoes?

Sean nós dancing does not require special dance shoes. However, we recommend comfortable shoes with a firm sole and a low, wide heel that allow you to move easily.

Am I too old to start?

No. Sean nós dancing is a great style to start at any age. We begin with simple steps, rhythm, and gradually discovering how to connect with the music. All you need is curiosity and the desire to explore a new way of moving.
