When people hear the words Irish dance, most of them probably imagine fast feet, a straight posture, arms held firmly by the sides, and dancers moving across a big stage in perfect synchronisation. You might think of the famous Riverdance show, sparkling costumes, or competitive Irish step dancing.

But Irish solo dancing has another side.

Less known. Less spectacular. Much more personal.

It is called sean nós dancing – and its greatest magic lies in its simplicity.

What is sean nós dancing?

Sean nós (Irish for “old style”) is a traditional form of Irish solo dance that existed long before Irish dance reached the big stages. The label “sean nós” was actually introduced much later, simply to make it clear which style of Irish dance we are talking about.

It is a dance that wasn’t created for judges or perfect performances. It was danced at home, in kitchens, at gatherings with musicians, among friends. It was part of everyday life – a way to respond to music, enjoy yourself, and share a moment with others.

And this is exactly the feeling that sean nós has preserved until today.

It is playful. Rhythmic. Natural.

And most importantly – every dancer can find their own voice within it.

What does sean nós dancing actually look like?

At first glance, you might be surprised by how different it is from the more widely known Irish step dancing.

In sean nós, you won’t find high kicks, big jumps, or a strictly fixed form.

Instead, you will see:

  • steps danced close to the floor

  • a more relaxed body posture

  • rhythmic footwork

  • improvisation

  • natural movement guided by the music

  • the individual style of each dancer

  • no special costumes or shoes required

A sean nós dancer uses their feet almost like a musical instrument. They create rhythm, complement the melody, and have a little conversation with the music.

Two dancers can dance to the same tune and use similar steps – and yet each of them will look completely different.

And that is exactly what makes it so beautiful.

Do I need to know Irish dance before I start?

The short answer?

Definitely not.

And that is exactly why sean nós is such a wonderful style for complete beginners. At any age.

You don’t need years of dance training behind you. You don’t need to be flexible, jump high, or even know Irish music.

At the beginning, you learn the very basics:

  • how to listen to Irish music

  • how to feel its rhythm

  • how to use simple steps

  • how to combine movements together

  • how to gradually start improvising

Sean nós is not about learning one choreography and repeating it exactly like everyone else.

It is much more like learning a language.

First, you learn a few “words” – the basic steps. Then you start creating your own “sentences” from them. And over time, you become able to respond to the music naturally.

Why do people love sean nós so much?

Maybe because there is no pressure to be perfect.

Many adults feel that starting dance later in life is difficult. They worry that everyone else will be better. That they won’t be fast enough, talented enough, or “dancer-like” enough.

Sean nós approaches dance differently.

It doesn’t ask:

“How high can you jump?”

It asks:

“Can you hear the music? How do you want to respond to it?”

It is a style that allows you to discover dance at your own pace.

Some people enjoy the rhythmic challenge and footwork. Some love the freedom of improvisation. Others enjoy the fact that they can dance anywhere – at home in the kitchen, at a festival, or together with musicians.

Is sean nós similar to tap dance or flamenco?

If you have experience with other percussive dance styles, sean nós may feel familiar in some ways.

Just like tap dance, flamenco, or clogging, it works with rhythm and the sound of the feet.

The difference is in the approach.

Sean nós is not about creating the most complicated rhythms possible. Quite the opposite – there is beauty in simplicity.

The connection with Irish music plays a huge role: the melody, the energy of the tune, and the ability to respond to what you hear in the moment.

It is not just “dancing to music”.

It is dancing together with the music.

How can you start learning sean nós dancing?

If this style has caught your attention, the best way is simply to try it.

At the very beginning, you don’t need special shoes (although we recommend comfortable, supportive shoes with a small heel) and you don’t need any previous dance experience.

What will help you?

1. Get to know the music

Sean nós is deeply connected with traditional Irish music. You will start recognising basic rhythms and tunes, and gradually discover how to move with them.

2. Learn your first steps

Beginners learn a simple repertoire of basic movements that can later be combined in different ways.

It is not about how many steps you know.

It is about understanding how they work.

3. Play with rhythm

And this is where the real fun begins.

Once you have a few basic elements, you can start exploring different combinations, changing rhythms, and creating something of your own.

4. Give it time

Sean nós may look simple – and that is exactly where its depth lies.

The longer you dance, the more possibilities you discover.

Who is sean nós dancing for?

Maybe it is exactly for you if:

✓ you are interested in Irish music and culture

✓ you want to dance but don’t want to compete

✓ you love rhythm

✓ you enjoy exploring and creating

✓ you are looking for a dance style you can start as an adult

✓ you have experience with tap dance, flamenco, or another rhythmic dance style and want to try something new

✓ you already do Irish dance and want to better understand music and improvisation

A small dance with great freedom

Sean nós dancing might not look as spectacular as big stage productions at first glance.

But once you dive into it, you discover that its magic lies somewhere completely different.

In a tiny change of rhythm. In a conversation with the music. In the moment when you realise that you don’t have to just repeat steps – you can truly start dancing.

And maybe you will discover that you don’t need a stage or a perfect choreography.

All you need is music, a few steps…

…and the desire to discover your own rhythm.
